City Explorations

A little heritage charm

Discover the vibrant cities of Java, beginning in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city. Rich in history and layered with culture, Surabaya offers far more than first meets the eye. We’ll take you beyond the surface to experience the stories, flavours and hidden corners that make this city special.

As someone who grew up here and holds a deep love for her hometown, Nunik is the perfect person to guide you. Her local insight, warmth and passion bring Surabaya to life in a way only a true insider can. Spend a couple of relaxed, immersive days exploring this cruisy city through the eyes of someone who knows it best.

Stay with us at the beautiful Hotel Majapahit Surabaya, one of the city’s most treasured landmarks. Built in 1910 during the Dutch colonial era, this grand hotel has quietly witnessed some of Indonesia’s most important historical moments, including events linked to the country’s independence in 1945.

Today, it feels like stepping into another time, with elegant white colonnades, leafy courtyard gardens and charming heritage details at every turn. It’s full of character, calm and tropical beauty, the perfect place to unwind while soaking up a little piece of Surabaya’s living history.

Market Visits

Fresh, healthy, cultural food

Each day brings its own culinary adventure, but the true highlight is always our visit to the local market in Batu. With a local by your side, and no tourist buses in sight, you’ll experience the market as it’s meant to be: vibrant, authentic and full of life.

The food, both familiar and wonderfully unfamiliar, will surprise and delight you, and the warmth of the people will stay with you long after you leave. Together, we’ll fill our baskets with the freshest seasonal produce, ready to return to Nomad HQ and turn it into beautiful Indonesian dishes to enjoy throughout your stay.

Travelling with a cook and a nutritionist means your meals will be as nourishing as they are delicious. Your days at our Batu villa will be filled with beautiful, home-cooked dishes, all prepared from scratch using the fresh produce we gather from the market.

There’s space to learn new cooking techniques and explore the stories behind Indonesian cuisine with Nunik, and enjoy generous banquets shared around the table each day. The food speaks for itself, vibrant, colourful and made with care, but if you’re curious to go deeper, there’s always time to chat with Mel about health, nutrition and the connection between food and wellbeing around the table.

Our mornings begin with relaxed walks to local cafés, meandering through fields of flowers, fruit and vegetables along the way. There’s time to pause, meet local farmers, soak in the scenery, and chat about the rhythms of village life, farming traditions and Javanese culture.

Easy afternoon strolls through villages and past local mosques, will give you to justify a long, slow evening. Enjoy a delicious meal with your group  then settle in with a book, share stories with fellow travellers, or simply enjoy the calm that comes from a day well spent.

Time to chill

And a little adventure

What would slow travel be without a little chill time? Take a refreshing dip, wander the nearby streets at your own pace, thumb through our collection of coffee table books, pull a few weeds in the garden, or simply relax on one of our four balconies and soak in the view across the farmland to the distant mountains.

And after all that cultural immersion and relaxed downtime, perhaps it’s time for a little adventure to round out your journey with us.

We’ll say goodbye to Batu and wind our way up into the mountains to experience one of Java’s most iconic landscapes. Rise early to watch the sunrise over the peaks, visit an active volcano, and explore the vast “Sea of Sand”, a 10-kilometre-wide expanse stretching across the base of Mount Bromo. Travelling by one of the region’s classic jeeps, you’ll journey through the dramatic terrain of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, taking in the extraordinary scenery and the unique local farming communities that call this place home. It’s a morning of big skies, dramatic scenery and fresh mountain air — the perfect, slightly wild note to end our time. together.
